Recruitment Schedule

• Our department will begin reviewing applications on a rolling basis starting Wednesday, September 24^th.
• Interview invitations will be sent out every Tuesday and Friday, beginning October 7^th.
• The final interview session will be on Tuesday, December 23rd.

Required Materials

• Dean's letter (MSPE) 
• Internal Medicine Chair's letter (may be written by a Chair's designee) 
• At least two additional letters of reference and recommendation 
• Medical school transcript 
• Personal statement 
• USMLE or COMLEX scores (USMLE not required for Osteopathic Applicants)

Recommendations for International Medical Graduates 

• Applicants should have graduated from medical school or residency within the last three years. 
• Applicants should have substantive hands-on clinical experience (not observership) of at least two months in a US academic institution. 
• Although there is no set cutoff score, applicants should score at least 220 on USMLE Step I and 230 Step II to be competitive with our usual applicant pool. 
• International medical graduates must be US citizens, be permanent residents, or be eligible for J-1 visas. Our institution does not sponsor H-1 visas.  
• Must apply via ERAS. No pre-match positions. 
• ECFMG certification before issuance of training license. 

4-year Internal Medicine-Nephrology Training Pathway! 

The University of New Mexico (UNM) is one of a handful of programs across the country participating in the Internal Medicine Nephrology Pathway (IMNP).  IMNP is an Advancing Innovation in Residency Education (AIRE) pilot program that has been approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). This forward-thinking initiative allows motivated and qualified trainees to complete both Internal Medicine and Nephrology training in four years, rather than the traditional five. Though increased exposure to nephrology starts during the residency portion of the pathway, trainees will ultimately complete roughly 2.5 years of internal medicine training followed by 1.5 years of nephrology training and be ABIM board-eligible in both specialties.

The IMNP is designed for select residents who meet eligibility criteria and demonstrate readiness for subspecialty training earlier in their residency. The curriculum integrates core requirements from both specialties, with carefully coordinated transitions and shared evaluations throughout the four-year pathway. This pilot aims to improve training efficiency while maintaining educational standards and clinical competency.

Rank Order Lock (ROL) and Second Look

For the upcoming residency match cycle, the Internal Medicine departmeent will be participating in the . This means that the program will "lock" it's rank order list after interviews have concluded, and before hosting any events such as second look offerings.
